New Beginnings…Delayed

It took 3 years for it to happen, but The Lonely Ones have released their debut album and it was worth the wait!

2019 brought the news that Shaun McCoy would be leaving Bobaflex to spend more time with family.  The four remaining members decided to reform as The Lonely Ones.  They would not be playing any Bobaflex songs but instead would focus on developing their own sound and writing new tunes.  They did a few farewell shows with Shaun as Bobaflex then closed out those shows with a few new The Lonely Ones songs.  I got to attend one of those shows so I knew right away that I was going to love what they were doing!

Fast Forward to March of 2020.  The Lonely Ones had a list of tour dates lined up, were set to release their first single and BAM! The world shuts down due to Covid.  Not the ideal start for a new band, but they kept on going and used the Covid lockdown time to write songs and rehearse so they would be ready to kick ass once the restrictions were lifted.  I think I remember they even rented a house so they could isolate and work on writing music.

They came out of Covid lockdown a strong, cohesive band with an arsenal of kick-ass songs.  They released the songs as singles over the next few years.  The singles could all be streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, etc but tons of people wanted a CD.  So, on Dec 16th they made us fans happy and released their first CD.  Cleverly saving some gems as CD-only songs.

The Wait is Over

The Lonely Ones CD has some previously released favourites such as “The Way Out”, “One More Time Around” and of course, the massive sing-along anthem “The Lonely One”.  But it also has many new songs that show the band taking their music in a different direction.  Not so heavy.  More just Rock with a groove, that only these guys can deliver.  Newly released “Don’t Cry for Me” is one of my absolute favourites.  It’s a song about someone who has lived it all and has no regrets.  It’s catchy as hell!  I heard it live a few times before it was released and got the chorus stuck in my head.  It’s one of those that I’d start singing in my head and think “This is awesome! wish they’d release it so I could hear it over and over again!

Another new favorite of mine that is only on the CD (for now) is “Shootin’ Up the Dance Floor” of all the new songs on there I think this one showcases the new direction the band is taking.  It’s got a disco vibe and just swings.  This one will definitely get the crowd moving at shows.

#1 in My Book

As always, The Lonely Ones have a magical ability to take personal experiences and turn them into killer songs.  I think that’s what I love most about the band.  The lyrics have meaning behind them that helps build that connection between the fans and the band.  Listen to the lyrics of “Gucci Bags” and you will know that band member was going through a breakup when it was written.  “Change the Station” reminds us of just how helpless and angry many of us felt over the last few years, and the ever-powerful “Eternal Sadness” is a very real look into depression, anxiety and suicide.   All this wrapped up nicely with some incredible hooks and catchy choruses.

There’s no doubt that The Lonely Ones CD is my #1 album of 2023.  Us fans asked for it and they delivered big time.  You can order it on their website or better yet, go see them live and buy it at the merch table, they will probably even sign it for you.
