Y&T – Holmfirth Picturedrome, UK (Concert Review)

Y&T

Why? WHY?

A million words have been written about how good Y&T are live in concert and that’s because every one of them is true.

Witnessing Dave Menketti and the guys at the final show of their UK tour was a true privilege. One of the great mysteries of our time is why Y&T never became true megastars. That question still raged in my mind as I left the Picturedrome on Sunday, November 10 knowing that this band is the full package.

A true band

Captain of the ship Meniketti has a voice better than most vocalists. He can also play the guitar as well as anyone you may care to mention. Anyone. Yet these days it is no longer the Dave Meniketti show. His compadres contributed in equal measure to a fantastic show.

There’s Dave‘s ever-reliable wingman John Nymann on rhythm guitar with the odd quality solo thrown in. Aaron Leigh doesn’t just play bass, he absolutely owns it, such energy! Finally, there’s Mike Vanderhule drumming like he’s taking his favorite convertible for a spin down the Pacific Highway on a Sunday morning. Huge grins, sheer class.

Celebration

Celebrating 45 years since their formation the gig was a celebration of their lengthy career. At least one song was played from each release which really freshened up the setlist.

New appearances included “Come in From the Rain”“Any Time At All”, “Struck Down” and “21st Century”. All were welcomed enthusiastically by the 600 folks crammed into this legendary venue but the real highlights came with the classics.

“Midnight in Tokyo” was a triumph of crowd participation with Meniketti encouraging the masses to sing the guitar parts too. It was spine-tingling.

“I Believe in You” was another huge moment with Dave showcasing his guitar genius. The crowd was mesmerized and astonished rolled into one. Remarkable.

More! MORE!

After over two hours of non-stop action, it was time for the big finish and the encore.

Beginning curiously with the slower “Sail on By” the band returned to rock with the classic “Open Fire”. Y&T then asked the crowd for requests and proceed to play ad-libbed shortened versions of “Don’t Wanna Lose” and “Barroom Boogie” before finishing, as they absolutely must, with “Forever”.

Legends

I will never tire of seeing this band and will return again and again, while ever they are in the UK. Y&T are legends and if you’ve not seen them yet, catch them when you can. You’ll be asking yourselves the question I’ll always be pondering. Why did they never conquer the world?

Next up is the forthcoming documentary of Y&T entitled On With The Show, out on November 26, check out the promo clip below.
