HURRICANE – Whisky A Go-Go (Concert Review)

HURRICANE - Whisky A Go-GoWith all the hurricanes ravaging the southern USA states, A different one rolled into the Whisky A Go-Go on August 10th. This Hurricane brought rock n roll and joy to the crowd. Hurricane has been dormant for a long time now, but last year released an album after 20 years titled Reconnected. The current Hurricane lineup consists of Tony Cavazo (Bass), Carlos Cavazo (Guitars), Mike Hansen (Drums) and Dan Schumann (Lead Vocals).

Hurricane hit the stage at approximately 12:00am to the die-hard fans who had started to funnel into the club around 6:00 pm. Hurricane played classic Hurricane hits from throughout the years. They broke up the setlist to include tracks from Hurricane and Snow which Tony Cavazo and Dan Schumann are original members of and Quiet Riot for ex-member Carlos Cavazo. They started the set with three tracks from releases from the Hurricane catalogue followed by two tracks from the Snow catalogue and finished the setlist prior to encore with some Quiet Riot tracks.

Hurricane owned the same stage for approximately 1hr 10 minutes as they never missed a beat on the tracks they picked. Dan Schumann has brought an amazing voice to Hurricane, he can hit the notes on the classic tracks and brings his vocal range to the new Hurricane tracks. Tony Cavazo kills it while wielding his bass on the stage, he keeps the tempo going and shows on stage what he can do. Mike Hansen was the timekeeper of the night and kept the backbeat going and on time. Mike had a drum solo in between two Quiet Riot cover songs where he showed why he has joined this band and why he belongs. Carlos Cavazo ex-Quiet Riot guitarist at first seems to stay out of the spotlight and not draw too much attention. Then as the night goes on and they hit the Quiet Riot portion of the set you see him step out of the darkness and get blasted by his abilities to wail and shred on the guitar.

This was the first time I was able to see Hurricane perform and I was blown away. They made it feel like it was the early 80s again and swept you up in that sleazy LA club feel.
