HARD:ON – Bad Habits Never Die (Album Review)

Hard:On - Bad Habits Never DieWith a name like what you see at the top of this review, you might think that we are branching out into a new “Adult” entertainment branch of the CGCM. Well, I can promise you we are not. We are still going to try to bring you some of the new, and titillating music that we discover. So get your tissues, and lotion ready, because I’m about to give ya…Hard:On (note I left out the “a”)

About The Band

Screaming forth from Sao Paulo, Brazil, the band took the sounds from the ’80s and once again freshens them up for the modern day listener. The best quote about the band is taken from their website, “They blend the ingredients of a Jazz Rock Drummer, a Thrash Metal Bass player, hard rock guitars, and throw in an industrial Metal lead singer”, hit Frappe, and voila! A signature sound that is literally all their own.

The Album

Right off the hop with the title track, “Bad Habits Never Die“, you’re into a groove and beat that hits you right in the gut! The vocals are a little muddy, but it’s still a great tune. To follow up is “Catwalk“. A song that has kind of a blues-based, but a rocking hook that almost has a Great White quality to it. “Dr. She” is a heavier song that has a deep guitar and bass sound that grabs you right off and leads you down a path of grittiness and stellar solos.

Hard:On - Bad Habits Never DieTouchdown” is a fantastic tune with some awesome guitar work, and drumming involved. However once again as good as this track is the vocals seem to be muddy and buried a little here, but this could be my personal favourite of the whole album. Halfway through the album, you’re treated to “Sunset Drive“. This tune has a different vocal sound and could be a tune of any racing car movie from the ’80s. Not that it’s a bad thing, but that’s immediately what popped into my head. I actually liked the melodies, and hooks on this one as well. The vocals here are more fitting, and appealing to my ears in this mix.

Kings Of The Pit“, and “Two to Tango” have some fantastic guitar work, and suck you right into the songs with that alone! To finish up the album, we have the tune “Life“. With a beautiful guitar harmony right off the start, it clearly shows the talent this band has. It’s a very melodic, and beautiful piece, and very well played and sang! It’s probably my second favourite on the album, but to end the record with a softer song, has always been a bone of contention with me.

Psycho Thoughts

All in all, Bad Habits Never Die by Hard:On is a pretty good album. I’d honestly give it 7 stars out of ten for the playing and musicianship alone. The muddy vocals are what brings it down for me. I think, however, with some proper mixing, and a new layout of the tracks, this album would get a much higher rating from this listener at least. It is, however, definitely worth checking out. I can definitely see a bright future for this band, and I look forward to hearing their next release!

Rock On!
