DELAIN - Apocalypse & Chill (Album Review)

Chillin’ with DELAIN

Apocalypse & Chill is the sixth studio album by the Dutch symphonic sirens, Delain. It was released via Napalm Records.  The band has been around since 2002 when it was formed by keyboardist Martijn Westerholt and singer Charlotte Wessels. The name of the band comes from the Kingdom of Delain in Stephen King‘s novel, The Eyes of the Dragon.

Apocalypse & Chill – The Album

I have never really followed much of what Delain has produced. However, this album is a real treat for those who enjoy classically styled metal with a European electronic sensibility.  What drew me in first was the great album title.  It is a knowing nod to the “Netflix and chill” phrase.  Second thing was the superbly odd cover art.  Hey, it is not often you see such an odd album cover where there are no dragons or severed heads in sight!

The music entrances with the wonderful singing of Wessels and the carnival of sonic strands that forces you to take notice.  There are elements of Nightwish in the mix. However, this is not a bad template to work from.

Kerrang! gave this album the thumbs up.  They cited “Burning Bridges” as the best song they have written; who am I to go against the magazine I grew up reading?  “Burning Bridges” is an abject lesson is how to write a masterpiece, with the tune thumping along and a chorus that makes you want to jump off mountains.

There are numerous highlights to this modern-sounding cornucopia of clarion calling.  I love the electronica of “To Live Is To Die“.  The chugfest of “Creatures” puts a bump in the smooth sounds and there is a standout epic with “Legions of the Lost“.  Wonderful stuff that is authentic art for the 2020s.

Check out this album if you love great modern metal with a progressive outlook and imagination.
