BLOODSTOCK - Thursday Bands
Bloodstock: Thursday Night Is Party Night!

Thursday at Bloodstock Metal Festival is special. Only folks with full weekend tickets are able to enjoy the entertainment put on. As always, there is a line up of bands to get the weekend party started and Bloodstock have announced the bands to perform for the pre-show event at Catton Hall Derbyshire on the 6th of August.

NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA

The headliner which was previously announced are The Night Flight Orchestra who comprise of members from Soilwork and Arch Enemy and sound nothing like either. With a plan to make the best ’80s rock driving tape ever, they make music as cheesy as it is brilliant. Every song has a huge chorus and is easy to sing along with. They will, without doubt, get a party going on the Thursday night preparing us all for 3 full hard rocking days of metal.

NEKROGOBLIKON

Now joining them are firstly the strangely named Nekrogoblikon from California. This 7 piece band mostly write songs and sing about goblins! The question raised about them is, “what happens when you put bloodthirsty music-loving goblins together?” The answer is apparently “a lot of disembowelment and catchy tunes!”. Yes, it is a bit bonkers but highly entertaining. It is a mix of melodic black metal and comedy. The band have this to say “For years fans have begged us to play Bloodstock. We kept declining just to annoy the fans. This year we have decided to stop being dicks and play. See you in August”.

THE CRAWLING

In a more serious vein come The Crawling from Northern Ireland. This 3 piece quote influences as Paradise Lost (who of course are playing the main stage at Bloodstock on the Saturday), Marduk, Katatonia and Bolt Thrower. They play heavy doom-laden death metal. The band themselves are thrilled to be playing the festival again as they played in 2016 on the New Blood stage having won through M2TM (Metal 2 The Masses competition) in Belfast which opened up other opportunities including getting to play Slovenia Metal Days the following year. They say they “cannot wait to bring our brand of misery fuelled death/doom to the Sophie stage.

RAISED BY OWLS

Also likely to raise lots of laughs, smiles and thrashing are local lads Raised By Owls. A mix of death, black and thrash metal with ludicrously named songs to make you go “what?” Songs like “Netflix And Kill”, “Satanists On T’Yorkshire Moors” and the wonderful “Yelling Slayer At Your Nan’s Funeral” (probably not recommended unless your Nan would have found such puerile nonsense funny). They released a Christmas song last year in which all proceeds went to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, the charity which the second stage shares its name. It seems highly fitting that they get to play the stage in her memory on the Thursday.

ANAKIM

Lastly returning from a triumphant performance in the New Blood tent from last year are Anakim. This band from Bournemouth way are progressive black/death metal and are working on their new album as I write this. Called The Elysian Void and possibly all about the Greek philosophy regarding the afterlife and a place that is reserved for mortals related to Gods and other heroes this should be intelligent and challenging. Hopefully, it should be out in plenty of time for them to open the whole festival weekend in August!

That is Thursday sorted out (apart from after-hours entertainment).

The rest of the festival includes headliners Devin Townsend, Behemoth, Judas Priest, Sophie headliners Bloodywood, The Night Flight Orchestra and Cattle Decapitation and an undercard including Saxon, Orange Goblin, Hatebreed, Conjurer Skindred, Phillip P Anselmo & The Illegals, Dark Tranquillity, Sacred Reich, Paradise Lost, Vio-lence, Jinjer, Bossk, Gloryhammer, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bury Tomorrow, Sylosis, Life Of Agony, Diamond Head, Butcher Babies, Toxic Holocaust, Winterfylleth, Memoriam, Exhumed, Necrot Unleash The Archers and Ramage Inc.
