Bloodstock have announced some more bands as well as releasing some other entertainment news for the festival to be held once again at Catton Hall Derbyshire England the weekend August 6 to 9.
First up on the Friday taking their place on the main stage (the Dio Stage) are legendary English thrash outfit Acid Reign. After being away for 24 years original singer Howard “H” Smith decided it was time to bring the band back to life. They played for the first time at Bloodstock in 2016 where they headlined the Sophie Stage (the big tent stage) and went down the proverbial storm on the Saturday night. Since then they have released a new album The Age Of Entitlement last year to rave reviews. Expect some mass moshing going on and some strong circle pits. It is going to be great, guaranteed!
Also added on the Friday to the Dio are Bristol hardcore band Svalbard. This band tackles some heavy-hitting topics such as sexual harassment, revenge porn and the exploitation of unpaid internships! They are a mixed bag musically having started I believe as more of a hardcore punk band, but morphing with black metal, post-rock and interestingly prog! Their last album was entitled It’s Hard To Have Hope, but knowing there are bands like this who care makes me think there is indeed hope!
Moving to Sunday still on the Dio are Idle Hands from Portland Oregon USA. They are goth metal and are new to me as well as the festival. They formed in 2017 and released an EP in 2018 called Don’t Waste Your Time which might have been aimed at main man Gabriel Franco’s previous outfit who he said were not up to the job of what he wanted to create and do. They released the album Mana last year. Vocally heading into either Mission or Cure territory but with guitars playing commercially friendly metal, this is a nice combination and something new for regular Bloodstockers.
Moving back to Friday but this time looking at the Sophie tent we have Swedish progressive metal outfit Soen who are playing in the “special guest” slot. Even more special as this will be their first-ever time playing a UK festival! Formed by singer Joel Ekelof and former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez. A band that creates soundscapes and atmosphere with crunching riffs that are reminiscent a little of say Tool this should be a treat for anyone who loves progressive rock/metal music.
Moving to the Saturday on the Sophie are Viscera a modern tech metal band, almost a bit of a supergroup, made up from ex-members of Heart Of A Coward, Abhorrent Decimation, Martyr Defiled, Nervecell and Surfaces. Their debut album Obsidian is due out in March.
On the Friday from Edinburgh Scotland come Dog Tired. They are previous Metal 2 The Masses winners back in 2014. With 2 more albums since then under their belt including the rifftastic The Electric Abyss, they have plenty of new music to entertain us with at Bloodstock.
Finally on the Saturday again on the Sophie comes Bailer from Cork in Ireland. This metallic hardcore band has a couple of EPs under their belts and a single called “Crawl Back” which came out last year. A band that are wonderfully brutal and vicious sounding they should create merry hell in the pits.
A new feature this year will be the Nordic Spirit Game Arena a place to play video games against your mates whilst having a breather from all the stage activity. The arena/tent will have things like Xbox, PS4 Consoles, gaming PCs and arcade machines. Of course, being Bloodstock all of this is free to do as part of the weekend ticket!
The rest of the festival includes headliners Devin Townsend, Behemoth, Judas Priest, Sophie headliners Bloodywood, The Night Flight Orchestra and Cattle Decapitation and an undercard including Saxon, Orange Goblin, Hatebreed, Conjurer Skindred, Phillip P Anselmo & The Illegals, Dark Tranquillity, Sacred Reich, Paradise Lost, Vio-lence, Jinjer, Bossk, Gloryhammer, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bury Tomorrow, Sylosis, Life Of Agony, Diamond Head, Butcher Babies, Toxic Holocaust, Winterfylleth, Memoriam, Exhumed, Necrot Unleash The Archers, Nekrogobikon, Raised By Owls, The Crawling, Anakim and Ramage Inc.
