Is it 1981? Have I been teleported back to the golden age of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal? Maybe not, and I often wish I would be, but this debut full length album from Amethyst evokes feelings and memories from such a heady time. Throw Down the Gauntlet is a killer from first riff to last.
Formed in 2020 in Switzerland Amethyst consist of Miguel S. on bass, Elmo on drums, Ramon S. and Yves B. on guitars and Fredric G. on vocals.
In 2022 they released the Rock Knights EP so it’s the natural progression that leads to the release of one of the albums of the year.
Unusually for a debut, there are no appearances of songs from the previous EP, there are eight new track to enjoy here.
The influences are clear for all to hear. With strong punchy bass lines, a twin lead attack and catchy as hell melodies it’s got D’Ianno era Iron Maiden written all over it, albeit with smoother edges.
But Amethyst are no tribute band, this is original, uplifting and inspiring in its own right.
Impressive
The musicianship is absolutely top-notch. It’s impressive to hear Miguel’s bass so prominent, a joy to hear. In conjunction with Elmo’s drums each track is built on solid foundations from which they flourish.
The twin leads are mesmerising and Ramon (of Running Maiden) and Yves (of Deathcult) have played a blinder. Lengthy solos exchanging lead duties are captivating. The feeling of a solo coming to an end only to be extended by a partner is a joy of the genre.
It’s tricky trying to select highlights as the album is full of them. The opener “Embers on the Loose” is a (fortunate) place to start. It encompasses all things Amethyst with pounding rhythm, cool vocals and solos to wallow in.
From then on you’ll be begging to hear the rest of Throw Down the Gauntlet.
The greatest movement in rock history has proud standard bearers for 2024 in Amethyst
